Ike Kinswa state park

Location

Ike Kinswa is located in Lewis County 20 miles east of Interstate 5 junction with U.S. 12 and approximately four miles north of Mossyrock on the north side of Mayfield Lake.

Acreage

453.57 acres with 46,000 feet of freshwater shoreline.

Acquired

The major portion of Ike Kinswa State Park was acquired through a use permit granted by Tacoma City Light (384.53 acres) in 1973. Inholdings were purchased for $87,704 from 7 individuals between 1963 and 1994 (69.5 acres).

Historical Background

Cowlitz Indians resided here and used an area above the bridge as a burial ground. Remains were removed before flooding by the Mayfield Dam. Two marked graves containing three bodies were left and fenced for protection and preservation in 1974. Originally named "Mayfield Lake State Park", the name was changed by the 1971 Legislature to honor Ike Kinswa, both as an individual and as a representative of the original inhabitants of the area, the Cowlitz Indians.

Facilities

5 comfort stations, bathhouse, 41 trailer sites, 60 tent sites, 2 primitive sites, 51 picnic sites, Big Toy play area, 400 feet of unguarded swimming beach, boat launch and 3.1 mile of hiking trails.

Activities

Picnicking, camping (Reservation Park), boating, water skiing, fishing, and hiking. The Commission has a concession agreement with Bob and Nancy Tosh for the sale of food, beverage, and groceries. This agreement expires December 31, 1999.
