West Hylebos state park
Location West Hylebos is located in King County between south 348th and southwest 356th Street; 1st Avenue South and Pacific Highway South (Hwy. 99). The park is in the incorporated city of Federal Way. Acreage Approximately 150 acres. Acquired The park was acquired in five parcels; the first in 1981 and the last in 1987. Historical Background The West Hylebos is a bog wetland area. It is the headwaters of Hylebos Creek which flows into Commencement Bay and Puget Sound and is one of the main drainage areas of Federal Way. There are 62 different kinds of plants with some being on the list of rare plants. Swamp violets, Bog Orchids and Wild Azaleas are just a few. There are 114 species of birds that populate the park and several small ponds are located throughout the park. Facilities At the present time, there are several small buildings including the Marckx Home. The plans call for a restroom, self-interpretation center and self-guided trail. Currently there is approximately 5,000 feet of hiking trails located in the park. Of Special Interest A boardwalk provides access to the area with viewing stations, bridges and signs. Activities Bird watching, hiking, and a self-guided nature walk are some activities that can be enjoyed at the park. Parking is available for approximately 20 vehicles.
